Tom’s Background

Tom Willis is a Christian, husband, father of four, West Virginia State Senator, small business owner, and U.S. Army Special Forces Green Beret. He holds a 100% pro-life, pro-gun, and pro-West Virginia family values voting record.

Like many West Virginians, Tom has faced deep personal hardship. His first wife, Michelle, passed away from cancer, leaving him a single father of two young children. Years later, his son Hunter also lost his battle with cancer and went home to be with the Lord. Tom believes that through these painful trials, God has refined his character and given him a deeper calling to serve others.

An Eagle Scout and Lieutenant Colonel, Tom joined the West Virginia National Guard in 2000. As a Green Beret, he has deployed across the globe, including missions to dismantle communist insurgencies in South America and combat terrorism in the Middle East. He speaks in English, French, Spanish, and Russian. Tom is also a published author and has appeared as a guest on FOX Business®, CNN®, and i24 News®.

Tom helped found the Rick Herrema Foundation, a nonprofit supporting military families coping with the unique stresses of military life. He also serves on the Board of Advisors for the Hunter Carlos Willis Aviation Program at Shepherd University.

Since 2015, Tom and his wife Sara have raised their three surviving children in Hedgesville, West Virginia. He enjoys outdoor recreation, firearms, talking with people, reading history, and singing. His service in the State Senate, military leadership, business experience, time living abroad, and personal losses have given him the perspective and resilience to represent West Virginia with honor in the U.S. Senate.
